Practical court support · England and Wales

McKenzie Friend support.

A calm, practical source of support when you are representing yourself in civil or family proceedings.

Enquire about support

You remain in control of your case.

We discuss the help you need, the court’s requirements, scope, availability and any fees before agreeing support.

Support with preparation and the day itself.

Going to court without a lawyer can feel unfamiliar and overwhelming. I welcome enquiries about practical and emotional support as a McKenzie Friend, with a focus on helping you stay organised, understand what to prepare and keep track of what happens.

Before a hearing

Help organising your own papers, building a chronology, noting the questions you want to ask and preparing practical arrangements. You remain responsible for your documents, deadlines and decisions.

During a hearing

Where the court permits: moral support, taking notes, helping with case papers and quietly assisting you. Attendance and the support allowed are subject to the court’s decision.

Finding appropriate help

Signposting to solicitors, legal aid information, court guidance and specialist services when you need advice or representation beyond this role.

What this role does—and does not—include

I am not offering services as a solicitor or barrister. A McKenzie Friend has no automatic right to address the court, question witnesses, sign documents on your behalf or conduct litigation. Rights of audience or conduct of litigation require a specific legal entitlement or permission from the court; they are not part of the standard support offered here.

The court decides whether a McKenzie Friend may assist. These arrangements apply to civil and family proceedings in England and Wales; tribunal and other jurisdictions have their own rules. Support does not guarantee any result.

Discuss your needs before sharing case papers.

Start with a brief enquiry, the type of hearing, the court location and any relevant date. Please do not send confidential court papers, information identifying children, or detailed allegations through a general website enquiry. We will discuss appropriate arrangements before any documents are shared.
